Toothache

Toothache

With this pain it can be mild or very severe and be felt as a prolonged nagging dull ache or a short sharp pain. There can be many causes for toothache from tooth decay to erupted teeth or dental abscess.

While you are waiting to see your dentist, we would advise if the pain is too much to take pain killers Paracetamol or Ibuprofen or using salt water to rinse around your mouth.

If the tooth is extremely sensitive to hot or cold, antibiotics may not help. The decay must be removed and filled. If this treatment is not currently available, these home measures may help make symptoms manageable until care can be assessed.

Desensitising/sensitive toothpaste (like sensodyne repair and protect) can help. Rub toothpaste directly on the affected area and do not rinse afterwards. Anaesthetic gel such as Orajel can help ease pain – follow the manufactures instructions carefully

Good cleaning with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar intake will help stop decay from getting any worse. If there is a hole in the tooth, or a tooth has cracked and is now sensitive/sharp, a temporary filling can be packed into the space. These are widely available from supermarkets and pharmacies.

A examination from your dentist will be able to diagnose the reason for the toothache and devise a treatment plan for you.

We always advise regular check-ups so we can see early diagnosis of dental problems which may occur and cause you pain.
